Part 1: Digital Economy, Crypto, & Stablecoins

Dr. Zongyuan “Zoe” Liu is the Maurice R. Greenberg Senior Fellow for China Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations in NYC, faculty member at Columbia University, and a highly regarded expert in East Asian and Middle East economies. Dr. Liu’s work focuses on international finance, sovereign wealth funds, industrial policies, and the geoeconomics of energy transition.  She is the author of two timely books:

• Can BRICS De-dollarize the Global Financial System? (Cambridge University Press, 2022)
• Sovereign Funds: How the Communist Party of China Finances its Global Ambitions (Harvard University Press, 2023), 2024 winner of the PROSE Best Book Award in Business, Finance, and Management.

In our candid conversation, recorded at the end of September, Dr. Liu shares her extensive knowledge of China’s digital economy, policy objectives, and long-term economic strategy. The interview is split into two parts, with Part 1 focusing on China’s response to stablecoin legislation in the United States, its policy on cryptocurrencies, and development of blockchain technology.
